Single-tooth dental implants are very common. The implant matches the size, shape, and strength of your natural tooth. First, we place the implant (or artificial root) into the bone. Once the implant integrates with the bone, it is ready for the placement of an artificial tooth. The process usually takes about four to six months.
If a tooth needs to be extracted prior to implant placement, that bone often needs to heal for about 4 months before it is strong enough to support an implant. In these cases, the full timeline in many patients who need a tooth extracted is 8-10 months. This varies greatly depending on the scenario and we will develop a timeline specific to each patient during their consultation.
One important benefit of dental implants is that they slow the shrinking of bone (resorption) and gum tissue from the area of the missing tooth or teeth, thus preventing the sunken-face look of premature aging and maintaining the health of the surrounding teeth. Teeth will tip or move forward into areas where teeth are missing which can alter and disrupt proper biting.
When multiple teeth in the same area are missing, an implant-supported bridge can be a great option for replacement. This allows for a fixed bridge that is held in place by two or more implants that are placed where the roots used to be.
Implants can also be used to support partials and dentures. Implants are placed beneath the denture and attached with components designed to improve the fit and function of the denture.
Once your treatment plan is created and the implant position is determined, we use a surgical guide on as many cases as possible. The guide is designed from the CT scan and 3-D printed. This customized guide creates very high accuracy for safety and predictability and allows us to place the implant exactly how we want it.
